According to the reports on Thursday (07 August), a major anti-terror operation in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kulgam district has entered its seventh consecutive day, marking the longest such operation in the Valley this year. The operation began last Friday following specific intelligence inputs about the presence of terrorists in the forest area of Akhal in South Kashmir. After an initial exchange of fire, security forces fortified the area overnight and resumed the operation the next day, resulting in the killing of two terrorists. The identity and affiliation of the slain terrorists are still unknown.

The situation remains tense as three more security personnel were injured in a fresh gunfight on Thursday morning, bringing the total number of injured personnel to seven. Security forces have been using advanced equipment, including drones and helicopters, to track down the remaining terrorists in the rugged terrain. The operation continues despite the challenges posed by the dense forest and complex landscape.

Army’s Northern Commander, Lt Gen Pratik Sharma, visited South Kashmir to assess the security situation and reviewed the counter-terrorism grid. He was briefed about the ongoing operation, operational readiness, and the steps being taken to neutralize the remaining threats. His visit underscored the significance of the operation and the army’s commitment to ensuring peace and stability in the region.

The Indian Army praised the resilience and determination of its personnel engaged in the prolonged encounter. Lt Gen Sharma commended all ranks for their unwavering efforts and reaffirmed the army’s resolve in maintaining security across Jammu and Kashmir. With no sign of the operation ending soon, the focus remains on flushing out the remaining militants while minimizing further casualties.
