According to the reports on Tuesday (1 October), heavy monsoon rains caused the Bagmati River in Kathmandu to overflow on Saturday (28 September), leading to severe flooding across the city. Floodwaters swept through homes, leaving widespread destruction and forcing thousands of people to flee. At least 170 people have died in Nepal as a result of the floods, which have affected large parts of the country.
Kumar Tamang, a resident of a riverbank slum in Kathmandu, shared his experience of the floods. He and his family had to flee their home after midnight as water rushed in, jamming their doors with mud. He expressed the fear they felt during the floods and their current struggle with a lack of clean water.
The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology reported that record-breaking rainfall was measured in 14 districts within 24 hours of the floods. The unprecedented rain contributed to the massive overflow of rivers, worsening the situation in Kathmandu and other affected areas.
In response, more than 3,000 security personnel have been deployed to assist with rescue operations. Helicopters, motorboats, and humanitarian organizations are working to help flood victims, conduct search and rescue missions, and provide relief supplies to those in need.
