On Friday (12 May), the Portuguese parliament approved legislation permitting euthanasia for persons over the age of 18 who are in unbearable pain or have terminal conditions.
Portugal thereby joins a limited group of countries that have legalized euthanasia or assisted suicide. It consists of the Benelux countries as well as Portugal’s neighbor, Spain.
