On the night of Saturday (29 March), Russia launched a large-scale drone attack on Ukraine, sending 172 Shahed-type UAVs and other drones from various locations, including Millerovo, Kursk, and Crimea. Ukrainian air defenses were able to intercept and destroy 94 of these drones, but several still managed to reach their targets, causing significant damage. The attack impacted several regions, including Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv, and Sumy, with Ukrainian forces using aviation, missile troops, and electronic warfare units to counter the assault. Despite the efforts, casualties and destruction were reported.
According to the reports on Saturday (29 March), the most severe impact was in the city of Dnipro, where the attack killed at least four people and injured 21 others. The drone strikes ignited fires across the city, particularly damaging high-rise buildings, a hotel, a restaurant complex, private houses, and garages. Firefighters worked to extinguish the flames, and local officials expressed their condolences to the victims’ families. The destruction in Dnipro highlighted the increasing toll of the aerial warfare as both sides escalated their attacks.
A series of drone strikes targeted Kyiv, prompting air raid alerts to be declared twice. A total of 30 drones were detected over Kyiv and its outskirts, with 16 of them successfully intercepted by air defense systems. Fortunately, no casualties or damage were reported within Kyiv itself, despite the prolonged air raid alert that lasted over three hours. The Ukrainian capital remains a key target in Russia’s ongoing air campaign.
This latest wave of attacks comes amid rising international pressure for a ceasefire, with U.S. President Donald Trump pushing for peace talks. However, both Russia and Ukraine continue to accuse each other of breaching commitments related to energy facilities and other areas, complicating any potential agreement. As fighting intensifies, civilian casualties have sharply increased, and the UN has expressed concern over the growing humanitarian impact of the war.
