According to the reports on Friday (20 December), the India Meteorological Department has issued an alert as temperatures in northern Karnataka, including Bidar, Vijayapura, and Kalaburgi, have dropped significantly. The temperatures have fallen by 5-6°C below usual levels, reaching lows of 6-7°C, much colder than the typical December temperatures of 12-13°C. The sharp drop in temperature has prompted the authorities to issue a red alert in Bidar for the next three days.
Residents in Bidar have been urged to stay indoors and avoid outdoor activities, especially during the early mornings and late evenings when the temperatures are expected to dip further. The district administration has advised wearing warm clothing such as jackets, sweaters, and hats to help cope with the extreme cold. The public is being cautioned to limit outdoor exposure to protect against the chilling weather.
The Agriculture Department has also raised concerns, warning farmers to avoid using two-wheelers and engaging in agricultural work during the cold nights and early mornings. The cold spell is impacting agricultural routines, making it essential for farmers to take necessary precautions to ensure their safety and wellbeing during these frigid conditions.
A shift in weather is expected soon, with light to moderate rains forecasted in parts of south, coastal, and central Karnataka starting from Friday (20 December). A drop in air pressure in the Bay of Bengal is expected to bring a rise in temperatures. However, some areas like Kolar and Bangalore Urban may experience isolated rain, while other regions will remain dry.
