A suicide attacker attempted to enter Afghanistan’s Ministry of Urban Development and Housing on Thursday (13 February) but was stopped by security forces. One of the guards shot the attacker before he could enter, triggering an explosion that killed one person nearby and injured three others. The incident highlights ongoing security threats in the country.

Despite a significant decrease in violence since the Taliban reclaimed power in 2021, Afghanistan continues to face attacks from the Islamic State (IS) group. IS frequently targets Taliban officials, foreign diplomats, and civilians in an effort to challenge the Taliban’s rule. These attacks have caused widespread fear and instability.

Casualty figures often vary between official reports and those provided by medical personnel. A doctor at Kabul’s Emergency Hospital stated that five to six injured individuals had been brought in for treatment. This discrepancy is common in such incidents, where ground reports sometimes contradict official statements.

The attack underscores the ongoing security challenges Afghanistan faces despite Taliban rule. While the Taliban claims to have improved security, IS remains a persistent threat, launching deadly operations across the country. The situation raises concerns about Afghanistan’s stability and the ability of its current rulers to maintain control.
