According to the reports on Tuesday (11 February), a suicide bomber detonated explosives outside a bank in Kunduz, northern Afghanistan, killing 25 people, including Taliban security forces, and injuring more than 30. The attack targeted a queue of civilians, civil servants, and security personnel waiting to collect their salaries.
Kunduz police spokesman Jumadin Khaksar confirmed that the bomber used improvised explosive devices to carry out the attack. Authorities are working with relevant organizations to identify and bring those responsible to justice.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack. However, IS-K, the regional affiliate of the Islamic State, has previously targeted Taliban security forces and government-affiliated locations, including a similar bombing outside a bank in Kandahar last year.
Although bombings and suicide attacks in Afghanistan have decreased since the Taliban took power in 2021, armed groups like IS-K continue to pose a serious threat. The Taliban’s ability to prevent such attacks and maintain security remains a key challenge for their rule.
