A devastating explosion at the Sigachi Industries chemical plant in Telangana’s Medak district has claimed at least 40 lives by Tuesday morning (1 July, local time). The blast, which occurred early Monday (30 June, local time), reduced the multi-storey facility to rubble and left dozens injured. Rescue teams from fire services, SDRF, and NDRF are continuing efforts to locate missing workers feared trapped beneath the debris. Initial reports indicate that a dryer malfunction in the quality control unit caused the explosion, which also damaged nearby structures.

The incident has deeply affected families across several Indian states, as the plant employed workers from Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal. Many bodies have been burnt beyond recognition, with only four identified so far. Forensic teams and DNA analysts are assisting in the identification process. The lack of accurate data from the company regarding the number of workers present at the time has made rescue operations more challenging.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences and announced ex gratia payments of Rs 2 lakh for the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured. Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy visited the site and hospital, directed emergency aid of Rs 1 lakh to each deceased’s family, and ensured full medical support for the injured. He has also instructed officials to enroll children of the deceased in government residential schools to secure their future. Additionally, a special officer will oversee coordination of relief efforts across departments.

To prevent future tragedies, the chief minister ordered inspections of all chemical plants in the state and a comprehensive report on safety shortcomings. A high-level meeting was held with top officials to assess the situation and improve safety protocols. Meanwhile, distraught families continue to gather at hospitals and the accident site, desperately awaiting news of their loved ones. The tragedy has sparked urgent calls for improved industrial safety standards across Telangana.
