According to the reports on Tuesday (8 July), Intense fighting broke out between two ethnic Chin armed groups—the Chinland Defence Force-Hualngoram (CDF-H) and the Chin National Defence Force (CNDF)—on the night of July 5 in Khawmawi, a village located on the Myanmar side of the Indo-Myanmar border. The conflict has since escalated, forcing a mass exodus of civilians into India. Nearly 3,000 refugees have entered Mizoram through the Zokhawthar border, seeking safety from the violence. This sudden influx has put the Mizoram administration and security forces on high alert.
Mizoram Home Minister Pu K Sapdanga confirmed that both the Mizoram Police and Assam Rifles are patrolling the border to prevent illegal crossings and maintain law and order. While India mandates registration and proper identification for all border entrants, many of those fleeing Myanmar are unable to comply due to the emergency nature of their displacement. The state government is balancing national regulations with humanitarian concerns, ensuring security while providing necessary support to those affected.
Relief efforts have been mobilized quickly. The Young Mizo Association (YMA), student unions, local volunteers, and civil society organizations have been actively involved in offering temporary shelter and aid to the refugees. The Champhai District Deputy Commissioner has been tasked with coordinating relief operations. Meanwhile, Mizoram MLAs have also joined hands to manage the growing crisis and ensure that displaced individuals do not spread out to other parts of the state, as seen in previous incidents.
The Home Minister expressed deep concern over the proximity of armed groups with unclear affiliations to the state border. He warned of potential security implications and reiterated the need for peaceful resolution between the warring factions. While Mizoram continues to provide humanitarian support, the state government is urging the central government and relevant international actors to push for dialogue and long-term peace in the region to prevent further escalation and displacement.
