According to the reports on Monday (6 January), Ukraine launched a new offensive in Russia’s Kursk region on Sunday (5 January), focusing on the Bolshesoldatsky district. Military bloggers reported that the Ukrainian Armed Forces effectively used electronic warfare to disrupt Russian drone operations, making it challenging for UAVs to function in the area. This marks a significant development in the ongoing conflict, showcasing the increasing role of technology on the battlefield.

Russian bloggers, including channels with large followings like “Operation Z” and individual accounts like Roman Alekhine and Sergei Kolyasnikov, highlighted Ukraine’s advanced jamming capabilities. These systems reportedly rendered many drones ineffective, though some Russian operators adapted by switching to unjammed frequencies. The attack involved Ukrainian tanks and armored vehicles, surprising Russian troops who had not anticipated the scale of the assault.

Ukrainian officials have largely remained silent on the offensive, but Andriy Yermak, chief of staff for Ukraine’s president, hinted at the operation, saying Russia was “getting what it deserves” in Kursk. Russia’s defense ministry confirmed the counterattack, detailing an assault involving tanks and combat vehicles targeting the Berdin farm area. Videos from the Russian side showed drone-assisted strikes, indicating ongoing drone activity despite jamming efforts.

The conflict highlights the growing importance of electronic warfare as both sides increasingly use drones for reconnaissance and attacks. Wired drones, which bypass jamming with fiber-optic cables, are emerging as a potential game-changer. Nations worldwide are investing heavily in counter-drone technologies, with the US allocating $250 million for advanced systems to address evolving threats in modern warfare.
