The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a significant earthquake of 7.0 magnitude striking deep in the sea north of Bali and Lombok islands in Indonesia early Tuesday (29 August), sending occupants fleeing houses.
The center of the quake occurred 203 kilometers (126 miles) north of Mataram, Indonesia, and it was 516 km below the Earth’s surface.
The magnitude was 7.1, according to Indonesian and US geological agencies, with no tsunami concern.
The tremor was felt across coastal areas in Bali and Lombok shortly before 4 a.m. (local time) and was followed by two quakes of magnitude 6.1 and 6.5.
