Residents of Seoul, the capital of South Korea, were startled by unusually loud air raid sirens and mobile phone messages urging evacuations early on Wednesday (31 May) after North Korea allegedly attempted to launch a satellite.
The sixth satellite launch attempt by nuclear-armed North Korea failed, with the launcher and payload splashing into the water, but not before emergency alerts and evacuation cautions were issued in several areas of South Korea and Japan.
