Authorities warned on Wednesday (22 March) that the death toll (currently 13 people) from a powerful earthquake that shook northeast Afghanistan on Tuesday (21 March) might increase significantly as vibrations were detected as far away as the Indian capital of New Delhi.
The 6.5-magnitude earthquake that caused buildings to be destroyed and landslides in places in northern Afghanistan and Pakistan have so far been verified to have killed at least 13 people.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the epicenter was located 187.6 kilometers (116 miles) deep in the Hindu Kush mountain range, 40 kilometers (24 miles) southeast of the Afghan town of Jurm.
At least four individuals were killed and 70 others were hurt in Afghanistan’s impacted regions.
This major earthquake is the most recent among the numerous earthquakes reported in the past few weeks.
