According to a top health consultant, China’s COVID-19 wave is expected to peak at over 65 million infections each week by the end of June, as authorities hurry to beef up their vaccination arsenal to fight the latest omicron strains.
According to a presentation by respiratory disease specialist Zhong Nanshan at a biotech conference on Monday (22 May) in the southern city of Guangzhou, XBB has been fueling a resurgence in cases across China since late April and is expected to result in 40 million infections per week by the end of May, before peaking at 65 million a month later.
Though the COVID-19 situation has improved greatly, people are still advised to follow COVID-19 safety protocols.
