According to the reports on Friday (8 November), Governor Jared Polis verbally declared a disaster emergency as a potentially historic snowstorm hit Colorado’s Eastern Plains and Front Range, prompting the activation of the Colorado National Guard. The declaration allows the state to mobilize emergency resources and activate the Colorado State Emergency Operations Center, setting the state’s emergency operations plan in motion to assist in storm response.
The National Weather Service (NWS) forecasts heavy snowfall, with rates potentially reaching up to 2 inches per hour. Accumulations could total up to 10 inches in some areas before the storm exits Colorado on Saturday (9 November). A winter storm warning has been issued for Denver, Colorado Springs, and much of southern and eastern Colorado, impacting critical highways like I-70.
Officials warn of hazardous travel conditions, especially during Friday’s evening (8 November) commute. Icy and snow-covered roads are likely to make travel very challenging or even impossible in some areas. The NWS cautioned residents to avoid unnecessary travel, as conditions may quickly worsen, posing risks to motorists and emergency responders alike.
Governor Polis directed state employees in government offices along the Front Range to work remotely on Friday (8 November). Public-facing state offices may close in particularly affected areas, especially in southern and southeastern Colorado, to ensure safety. Essential state facilities, such as those related to health and safety, will remain open, with critical staff expected to report as usual.
