As hospitalization rates continue to rise, two new COVID-19 types, EG.5 and FL.1.5.1, are making the rounds this week.

According to viral sequencing data from the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, EG.5, dubbed “Eris,” is now a prominent variety in the United States, accounting for approximately 17 percent of cases nationwide, whereas FL.1.5.1 is largely on the rise in the Northeast.

The World Health Organisation designated Eris as a “variant of interest” on Wednesday (09 August), but there is no evidence that it poses a greater hazard to public health than other variants. Eris has also produced its own subvariant, EG.5.1.

Eris and FL.1.5.1 are both omicron descendants. According to St. George, Eris has one variation in its spike protein — a protrusion that binds the virus to the cell — while FL.1.5.1 has two.

To defend themselves against COVID-19, people should take precautions and be aware of the virus’s existence when socializing.

According to health professionals, having the vaccine is one of the best ways to guard against severe sickness. Fever and chills, cough, loss of taste or smell, and exhaustion are all symptoms of the condition.

COVID-19 medicines are generally available with a prescription, and at-home tests are available at pharmacies.
