At least 40 schools in Delhi, including prominent institutions like DPS RK Puram, GD Goenka Paschim Vihar, and Modern School Mandi House, received bomb threats via email on Monday morning (9 December). The first alert was reported at 6:15 am (local time) for GD Goenka and another at 7:00 am for DPS. Delhi Police, Bomb Disposal Squads, and fire department officials responded promptly, but no suspicious items were found on the school premises.
Delhi Chief Minister Atishi voiced serious concerns about the Capital’s worsening law and order situation. She criticized the BJP-led central government for failing to provide adequate security. Atishi highlighted that recent incidents, including ransom demands, murders, and shootings, have compounded the sense of insecurity among Delhi residents.
The surge in bomb threats has become a national concern, affecting schools and airlines across India. Between August 2022 and November 2024, domestic airlines reported 1,143 hoax bomb threats, with 994 occurring in 2024 alone. October 2024 was particularly alarming, with 680 reported incidents causing widespread panic and disrupting operations in critical sectors.
Responding to the rising threats, the Delhi High Court directed the city’s government and police to develop a comprehensive action plan and standard operating procedure (SOP). The SOP must define the roles of all stakeholders, including law enforcement, school authorities, and municipal bodies, to ensure coordinated emergency responses. An eight-week deadline has been set for compliance.
