According to the reports on Wednesday (19 March), Russia launched a series of drone strikes targeting civilian areas in Ukraine, including a hospital, despite ongoing peace discussions between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump. These attacks continue to damage Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, contradicting Putin’s earlier agreement to halt strikes on power grids. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stressed that the attacks prove the necessity of increased international pressure on Russia to end the war. He emphasized that only a genuine cessation of attacks on civilian infrastructure would signal Russia’s desire for peace.
The White House described the phone call between Trump and Putin as a first step toward peace, outlining agreements on halting attacks on energy infrastructure and discussions on a maritime ceasefire in the Black Sea. However, the Kremlin added that Russia would not consider a broader ceasefire without meeting additional demands, which are strongly opposed by Kyiv. Shortly after the call, air raid sirens sounded in Kyiv, followed by explosions, as Russian drones targeted multiple regions across Ukraine, including Sumy and Donetsk.
Despite the tensions, both leaders discussed a potential prisoner exchange, set for March 19, involving 175 individuals from each side. As a goodwill gesture, 23 wounded Ukrainian servicemen in Russian hospitals are to be handed over. Putin’s proposal to halt attacks on energy infrastructure for 30 days was positively received, with the Russian military instructed accordingly. However, Zelenskyy dismissed the ceasefire agreement as unrealistic, citing the continued drone attacks.

He made it clear that Ukraine would not accept the recognition of Russian-occupied territories as part of any settlement.
