According to the reports on Monday (14 October), The South African Weather Service (Saws) has issued Yellow Level 2 warnings for various parts of the country, particularly concerning severe weather conditions. Residents in the north-eastern parts of the Free State, north-western KwaZulu-Natal, and eastern Mpumalanga should prepare for severe thunderstorms. These storms could bring excessive lightning, strong winds, hail, and heavy downpours.
In addition to the storms, heatwave conditions are expected to persist in several regions. Areas like Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and the central and eastern parts of the North West and Free State will continue experiencing high temperatures. However, the forecasters noted that temperatures may drop below the heatwave threshold in parts of the Northern Cape, Eastern Cape, and KwaZulu-Natal.
Saws also warned of strong winds and wild waves between Cape Agulhas and Alexander Bay, posing risks for coastal regions. The combination of gusty winds and stormy weather could lead to hazardous conditions for residents and travelers in those areas.
Furthermore, Saws issued an alert for extremely high fire danger in several northern and central regions. These include the Northern Cape, parts of Gauteng, the Free State, the North West, and Limpopo. The risk of wildfires remains high due to the ongoing hot and dry conditions in these areas.
