Ukraine has reportedly taken control of 100 Russian settlements as its forces continue an offensive into Russia’s Kursk region, according to Ukrainian General Oleksandr Syrskyi. The general stated that Ukrainian troops now control 1,294 square kilometers (500 square miles) of Russian territory and have captured 594 prisoners of war.
On the morning of Wednesday (28 August), a Ukrainian drone attack targeted the Glubokinskaya oil depot in Russia’s Rostov region, setting several oil tanks on fire. Rostov Governor Vasily Golubev confirmed the attack, stating that four Ukraine-launched drones were destroyed over the region.
Meanwhile, Russian officials claimed that Ukrainian troops attempted another cross-border attack into Belgorod, a region neighboring Kursk. Belgorod’s regional governor, Vyacheslav Gladkov, described the situation on the border with Ukraine as “difficult but under control,” alleging that 500 Ukrainian troops attacked two checkpoints.
However, this claim has not been independently verified, and Kyiv has not commented on the situation. A Russian military blog reported that there had been no major attempts to breach the border.
