According to the reports on Tuesday (27 May), Ukraine has declared its full readiness for a truce and ceasefire, with Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stating that the country is willing to stop hostilities immediately. He emphasized that the initiative now lies with Russia, accusing Moscow of responding to peace overtures with intensified missile attacks. According to Sybiha, Ukraine is open to ceasefire durations of 30, 60, or 90 days, expressing flexibility and a strong desire for peace.
Reports in the American media have cited insider information suggesting a proposed ceasefire date in July. When questioned about the specific timing, Sybiha reiterated Ukraine’s consistent stance on readiness and highlighted that there are no delays from Ukraine’s side. The Ukrainian leadership continues to push for diplomatic solutions, even as Russia escalates military actions.
In a related development, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated on May 19 that Russia is prepared to work with Ukraine on a peace memorandum following a conversation with former US President Donald Trump. This document, as discussed between Trump and Putin, could lay the foundation for a future peace treaty and define the essential principles for an agreement. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the discussion and supported the idea of a bilateral format for the memorandum.
Despite this, progress has stalled. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov noted that no deadlines have been set for the memorandum’s completion. Zelenskyy criticized Moscow for not presenting any draft within a week of the announcement. Meanwhile, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that a draft is being prepared and will be submitted after a planned 1000-for-1000 prisoner exchange. In parallel, Ukraine continues drafting its version of the truce framework and awaits Russia’s concrete proposals.
