According to the reports on Saturday (18 October), Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called for a ceasefire with Russia along the current front lines, emphasizing the need to halt hostilities and move toward peace negotiations. His appeal came after a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington, D.C., where both leaders expressed a shared stance on stopping the war and finding diplomatic solutions. Zelenskyy stated that both sides should “stop where we are” to begin working toward a lasting peace deal.
This meeting marked the third time Zelenskyy and Trump have met, and it came amid renewed discussions about U.S. support for Ukraine, particularly concerning the supply of long-range missiles. Trump, who also communicated with Russian President Vladimir Putin, has shown growing interest in mediating between the two sides. He has repeatedly called for an end to the conflict, urging both Ukraine and Russia to make compromises to stop the bloodshed.
In his Truth Social post, Trump echoed Zelenskyy’s remarks, stressing that enough blood had been shed and that both nations should stop fighting immediately. He proposed that both sides “claim victory” and let history determine the outcome, calling for an end to violence, loss of life, and the massive financial costs of war. His message appeared to aim for a symbolic compromise that allows each side to save face while halting the devastation.
Meanwhile, Russia maintains a hardline position on any ceasefire conditions. Moscow insists that Ukraine must withdraw from regions annexed by Russia in 2014 and officially recognize the new borders. Additionally, Russia demands the “denazification” of Ukraine as part of its preconditions for peace. These stipulations continue to pose significant obstacles to achieving a mutually acceptable ceasefire agreement.
