A strong 7.8-magnitude earthquake that occurred on Monday (06 February 2023) in southern Turkey, near the Syrian border, claimed the lives of at least 230 people and resulted in the collapse of multiple buildings in Turkey and Syria. Authorities predicted a rise in the death toll.
440 people got injured and approximately 100 people were confirmed dead, according to Turkey’s state media. In the province of Malatya, at least 130 structures collapsed, while 16 did so in Diyarbakir. The search for survivors buried beneath the debris is underway.
Following the earthquake, Turkish officials have issued a “level 4 alarm” that requests assistance from other countries.
