According to the reports on Tuesday (24 December), gunmen attacked a vehicle belonging to the Indian Consulate in Jalalabad, Afghanistan, resulting in the death of a bodyguard and injuries to two others, including local staff member Wadud Khan. The incident occurred near Talashi Chowk, with preliminary reports indicating Khan was the target of the attack.

India had shut down the Consulate and its operations in 2020 due to escalating security concerns, withdrawing all Indian personnel. However, some local employees continued working in limited capacities despite the heightened risks.

The attack underscores the ongoing challenges and dangers faced by foreign missions and their remaining staff in Afghanistan. Local sources highlighted the precarious situation of those connected to foreign operations amid increasing violence in the region.

Further details of the incident are still awaited, as investigations are reportedly underway. This tragic incident adds to the growing list of security threats in Afghanistan, particularly for individuals associated with international organizations or diplomatic missions.
