A novel COVID-19 variety is propagating across the US, with Utah having the highest number of cases so far. Currently, the EU.1.1 variation accounts for around 1.7% of all cases in the country.
According to the most recent Centres for Disease Control and Prevention data, Utah now accounts for around 8.7%.
However, Kelly Oakeson, head scientist for next-generation sequencing and bioinformatics at the Utah Department of Health and Human Services, believes this is because Utah sequences the virus more frequently. So far, about 100 instances have been sequenced in the state.
According to Oakeson, EU.1.1 is a subvariant of omicron that does not appear to induce serious infection. So far, the state has not witnessed an increase in hospitalizations as a result of this mutation, so while there is no need to worry, experts say vigilance is essential.
Though the COVID-19 situation has improved greatly, people are still advised to follow COVID-19 safety protocols.
